Katie Rowan, the most decorated player in the program’s history, joined the Syracuse staff as an assistant coach in September, 2012. She held that position until summer of 2015 when she accepted the head coach position at Wagner College. Rowan is the Orange’s career leader in points and assists.
Rowan worked with the Orange offense, which finished second in the nation in scoring in 2013. She helped mentor first-team All-Americans Alyssa Murray and Kayla Treanor. Murray was the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, while Treanor fnished second in the nation in points.
A volunteer coach at Syracuse in 2010, Rowan served as an assistant coach at Albany in 2011-12. She helped guide the Great Danes to the 2011 America East Conference regular-season and conference titles and back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 2011 quarterfinals.
In her career, Rowan amassed 396 points on 232 goals and 164 assists. She is the school’s only three-time first-team All-America selection. Rowan led the nation in scoring in 2008 and was named a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy and the Honda Award. She set single-season school records for points (142) and assists (69) that year and led the Orange to the national semifinals for the first time in school history. Rowan was a four-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection and a two-time BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year honoree.
In 2013, Rowan helped the U.S. national team to its second consecutive gold medal at the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup in Oshawa, Ontario. She was named the player of the match in the final game after setting a program record for goals in a game (8) and recording 10 points. Rowan also helped the U.S. to the gold medal at the 2009 FIL World Cup in Prague, Czech Republic. She was Team USA's second-leading scorer, recording 35 points during the tournament. With 67 career points in 14 games, Rowan is tied with Kelly Amonte-Hiller for the most points in U.S. history.
Rowan earned her bachelor’s degree in inclusive education/special education and sociology in 2009 and her Master’s in literacy education in 2010 from Syracuse. She was voted to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA At-Large Academic All-America national first team as a senior after receiving second-team honors as a junior. Rowan earned the 2009 Soladay Award, which is the highest honor bestowed upon a Syracuse University student-athlete.
