Senior Djordje Filipovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) won his ninth career BIG EAST title Friday night in the 100 butterfly at the 2002 conference championship meet being held at the Nassau County Aquatics Center on Long Island. Filipovic already took gold in the 200 individual medley at this year's championship meet.
After finishing third in the preliminaries of the 100 butterfly on Friday morning, Filipovic found something extra inside to capture the championship at night, the second consecutive season that he has won the event. This year, Filipovic defeated the BIG EAST Conference record holder in the 100 fly, Jaak Savvi of St. John's, with an NCAA "B" cut time of 48.55. Filipovic owns the Syracuse University record in the men's 100 fly with a time of 48.14 which he recorded at last year's conference championship meet.
Last season, Filipovic was the only male swimmer to win three individual titles at the BIG EAST Championships. If he is successful Saturday in defending his title in the 200 butterfly, then he will tie former Orangemen Jay Craft and Sebastien Goulet for second in career BIG EAST crowns (10).
Also on Friday, the Orangewomen's sophomore class stepped up to contribute points. Sophomore Megan Daney (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock) registered a fifth-place finish in the women's 100 backstroke with a time of 57.36. In the prelims, Daney was four tenths of a second off the school record in the 100 backstroke set in 1997 by Branka Sustic (57.24).
Sophomore Elyse McDonough (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) posted her second top eight individual finish of these championships with a sixth-place performance in the women's 100 butterfly. McDonough tallied an NCAA "B" cut time of 55.81 in the finals. She set her third school record of the season in this event during the preliminary race. Her time of 55.63 during Friday morning's prelims surpassed Ann Jablonowski's 1998 mark of 56.53. McDonough now owns four individual school records for Syracuse in the 100 fly (55.63), the 200 fly (2:03.50), the 200 IM (2:05.94) and the 400 IM (4:23.91).
Sophomores Kalei Mahi (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame) and Annie Tudryn (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) were 11th and 12th respectively in the women's 100 breaststroke, while classmate Melissa Plummer (Newark, Del/Christiana) picked up points in the 400 individual medley with a 16th-place finish and a time of 4:35.35. She went faster in the prelims with a time of 4:34.28.
On the men's side, sophomore Spencer Raymond (Idstein, Germany/Singapore American School) won the consolation finals race in the 100 breaststroke. His personal-best time of 56.75 was good for an overall ninth-place finish. Freshman Josh Scott (Clayton, Calif./Clayton Valley) continued to impress at his first BIG EAST Conference championship meet. Scott was 14th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.99. Classmate Gustavo Kertzscher (Skurup, Sweden/Österportskolan) scored points for SU in the same event with a time of 52.39 in the finals, good for a 16th-place finish. Both backstrokers were faster in the prelims with Kertzscher actually finishing ahead of Scott with a time of 51.83 and Scott with a time of 51.89.
The Pittsburgh Panthers still led the 12-team field after the second night with 585 points. Rutgers was second with 322 points, followed by Virginia Tech (320), Notre Dame (276) and St. John?s (243) rounding out the top five.
The Notre Dame women's team was in charge of the women's field with 555 points. Rutgers was second with 382.5 points, followed by Miami (357), Pittsburgh (282) and Villanova (262) rounding out the top five.
The championships will conclude Saturday, February 23. Preliminary events will begin at 10:30 a.m., while the finals will begin at 6 p.m.
