The focus is now completely on Syracuse University for new head football coach Doug Marrone. He and the New Orleans Saints leadership decided it was in the best interest of Marrone, Syracuse University and the NFL franchise for Marrone to resign from his position as offensive coordinator in order to hit the ground running for the Orange.
“I leave on a great terms with the team, including owner Tom Benson, general Manager Mickey Loomis and head coach Sean Payton,” Marrone said. “As a first-time head coach Sean understands the time restraints and the pressure to get going. I was prepared to fill my responsibilities with them, but in the long run this works out the best with both parties and I am excited to get going with Syracuse.”
Marrone will return to Syracuse to hold meetings, take the NCAA compliance test and plan recruiting trips. He will then begin travelling to assemble his first recruiting class.
“Once I take care of what I have to do in Syracuse, I am going on the road to further my relationship with the high school coaches in the New York state. I already know so many of them and I look forward to seeing them again as the Syracuse University head coach.”
