CLEMSON, S.C. – Senior Marissa Kanemura set a new career-high tonight with nine digs despite the Orange suffering a 3-0 setback against No. 19 Clemson. Junior Sarah Morton led Syracuse with nine kills on 18 attacks and tallied two solo blocks.
“We had some ups and downs, but we saw some good things happen,” assistant coach Carol LaMarche said. “There were good moments throughout the three sets.”
Senior April Quigley led the Orange offense with 17 assists, while freshman Hallie Morse added eight assists. Freshman Erin Little was second on the team with seven kills and seven digs and freshman Noemie Lefebvre added five kills, seven digs and one service ace.
Despite scoring first, the Tigers barely came out on top in the first set. Trailing 19-13 about halfway through the set, the Orange were able to take control after several Tiger errors to bring themselves within two points of Clemson. The two teams went back and forth before Morton tied it up for the Orange, 24-24. However, Clemson closed out the match, 26-24.
Little posted five of her seven kills and Morton posted both her blocks in set two. In the 25-11 loss, sophomore Mindy Stanislovaitis added two kills and junior Shanetha McLaurin closed out the set with a service ace.
Thanks to an attack error by the Tigers, the Orange earned a spot on the board first in set three. The Orange hung tight with the Tigers for the first part of the set before the Tigers grabbed a six point lead. With four kills from Morton, and a kill each from sophomore Sarah Hayes and Pellerin, the Orange was able to close the gap slightly to end the third and final set, 25-19.
“Clemson was ranked No. 19 in the preseason,” LaMarche said. “It’s good that we could hang with them during all three sets. We kept the score tight in set one and were able to come back strong in set three.”
