Syracuse head football coach Doug Marrone has hired Jimmy Brumbaugh to coach the Orange defensive line. Brumbaugh joins the Syracuse staff after two successful seasons at Louisiana Tech.
During Brumbaugh's first season at Louisiana Tech, the Bulldogs ranked 13th in the nation against the run, allowing just 103.9 yards per game. It was the best performance by a Louisiana Tech defense since the school joined the Football Bowl Subdivision in 1989. The 2008 Bulldogs beat Northern Illinois, 17-10, in the Independence Bowl, marking the school's first bowl victory since 1977.
Brumbaugh mentored Bulldog defensive tackle D'Anthony Smith, who earned All-Western Athletic Conference First Team honors in 2008 and 2009. As a junior he was second in the league with 65 tackles, including five sacks, and in 2009 he had 51 tackles, including 5.5 for a loss of yards and 3.5 sacks. The 2008 Bulldogs registered 27 sacks, the most by a Tech defense in almost 10 years, and posted a 21-0 shutout over San Jose State, the first shutout by a LA Tech team since 1996 (a span of 148 games).
Prior to his tenure at Louisiana Tech, Brumbaugh was the strength and conditioning coach at LSU in 2006 and 2007, helping the Tigers to the 2007 National Championship. In 2005, Brumbaugh was the defensive line coach at Tennessee-Chattanooga, where he helped lead the Mocs to a winning season, including a victory against 21st-ranked Jacksonville State.
Brumbaugh began his coaching career at Jacksonville State in 2004, where he helped lead the Gamecocks to their first Ohio Valley Conference title.
A standout defensive lineman at Auburn from 1995 through 1999, Brumbaugh played in 48 games for the Tigers, recording 291 tackles, including 22 tackles for loss and 15 sacks. In 1997, he earned All-Southeastern Conference First Team honors as a junior after recording a career-best 80 tackles. He earned Freshman All-SEC honors in 1995, was a second team All-SEC selection in 1996.
Auburn, which won the 2007 SEC West Division title played in three bowl games during Brumbaugh's tenure, including the 1995 Outback Bowl, the 1996 Independence Bowl and the 1997 Peach Bowl. Auburn beat Army, 32-29, in the Independence Bowl, and defeated Clemson, 21-17, in the Peach Bowl.
After finishing his college career, Brumbaugh signed a free agent contract with the San Francisco 49ers in 2000 and played professionally in the XFL, AFL and AFL2 before joining the coaching ranks.
A native of Keystone Heights, Fla., Brumbaugh earned a BS in health promotions from Auburn in 2004. He and his wife, Kelly, have sons, Nash and Legend.
