Orange nation – here is your chance to give back to your community.  The Syracuse football game against Louisville on Saturday, Nov. 10 (12 p.m; ABC) will be this year's Dome Donation Day. The Salvation Army of the Syracuse Area is partnering with SU and CXtec/TERACAI to support local families and victims of Hurricane Sandy with food and money drives. Fans in attendance can bring non-perishable food items or donate cash contributions to put in Red Kettles and Food Barrels that will be set up around the Carrier Dome, on the SU Quad, and at The Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel. CXtec, TERACAI, SU's Mary Ann Shaw Center and Smith Road Elementary School will be providing volunteer bell ringers.
Â
In addition, those attending the game and those watching at home will be encouraged to donate to The Salvation Army's Hurricane Relief Efforts in the following ways:
Â
• Donating by phone at 1-800-SAL-ARMY (1-800-725-2769)
• Donating online at salvationarmyusa.org
• Donating via mobile devices by texting STORM to 80888 ($10 donation)
Â
Dome Donation Day is a tradition started by SU's beloved Coach Mac in the early 1980s. For nearly 3 decades, local football fans have helped The Salvation Army kick off its Red Kettle Season by filling barrels with non-perishable food items and red kettles with cash contributions so The Salvation Army can provide life changing services to more than 40,000 local residents throughout the year. Salvation Army programs include a food pantry, shelters for the homeless, licensed, quality day care for low-income families, outreach and counseling for runaway and homeless teens, housing, parenting and life skills training for young mothers, and senior services.
Â
"The Salvation Army appreciates the consistent support it receives from SU and other community partners like CXtec and TERACAI," says Major George Polarek, Area Coordinator for The Salvation Army of the Syracuse Area. "When we all pull together, we are able to make sure that all families in Central New York and in those areas affected by Hurricane Sandy have food on their tables and a safe, warm place to sleep."
Â
Those wanting to volunteer with The Salvation Army this holiday season are encouraged to call 479-3668 or visit sasyr.org.Â
