Fan Engagement Part Of Dome Experience

Syracuse Athletics, in conjunction with its technology partner SIDEARM Sports, is now using social media to increase fan engagement during games. Fans are now encouraged to check-in, tweet, and tag their photos using #OrangeNation.
Two summer initiatives made this possible. First, complete stadium WIFI (ORANGE HOT SPOT) is available to all fans who attend games. Secondly, new state-of-the-art Daktronics LED video boards and a 360-degree ribbon board were installed.
Fans may have noticed the #orangenation on the football field and Jim Boeheim court which encourages fans to send tweets, or photos using this hashtag. Taking this one step further, SIDEARM Sports worked with Daktronics to take selected tweets and dynamically display them on the ribbon boards. They then built a social media control panel which allows athletics to moderate all tweets and photos before appearing on any of the boards.Â
"The first couple of football games we were concerned at the low number of tweets, however, once fans started seeing their tweets on the boards, engagement increased exponentially. During the most recent games we are lucky if we can get 10 percent of the tweets on the boards, there are just so many," said Jeff Rubin, CEO of SIDEARM Sports.Â
This past week, SIDEARM Sports added another social network, by integrating with Foursquare, the popular location based social network. Foursquare, which allows fans to check-in at venues such as the Carrier Dome, was launched in 2009, has over 20 million users, and was founded by a Syracuse University alum Dennis Crowley.Â
As fans check-in to the Carrier Dome, Syracuse athletics welcomes them by putting their photo on the ribbon boards.Â
"We're excited to see Syracuse leveraging Foursquare's data to make the in-game experience more social and rewarding for fans. We've seen an increase in check-ins for these games, so it is clear fans want to see themselves and their friends on the scoreboard,"Â said Jonathan Crowley, Director of Business Development at Foursquare.
As far as Foursquare is aware, Syracuse athletics is the first college or professional team to integrate Foursquare on their ribbon/video boards.
The next step is to integrate Instagram, the popular photo-sharing social network onto the Carrier Dome video boards. At halftime of the men's basketball games, Syracuse athletics plans on displaying selected fan submitted photos.
