SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The No. 13 Syracuse men's crew began its cup season with its only home regatta of the spring on Saturday as No. 7 Navy won a fast and tight race over the Orange and No. 11 Cornell to claim the Goes Trophy at the James A. Ten Eyck Boathouse at the Onondaga Lake outlet.
The Midshipman won a close race between three of the top varsity eight crews in the country to win its first Goes Trophy since 2005. Navy finished in a time of 5:48.3 while Cornell came in second in 5:50.2 and the Orange, the defending Goes champion, finished third in 5:52.0.
Dave Reischman's SU V8, coxed by Isaac Budmen, consisted of Aidan Barrett (stroke), Mike Dietrick (7), Chris Bickford (6), Chris Lutz (5), Kynan Reelick (4), Mac Zink (3), Mason Leasure (2) and Jake Martens (bow).
The Orange second varsity eight made a strong move in latter half of its race to overtake Navy (5:54.8) and finish second in a time of 5:50.4, less than a second behind Cornell (5:49.7).
Syracuse's frosh eight and second frosh eight both posted third-place finishes as Cornell won the frosh eight and Navy took the second frosh eight.
The crews raced on calm waters and temperatures in the low 50s.
The Goes Trophy has been contested by the Orange, Big Red and Midshipmen since 1956. It was created by Clifford “Tip” Goes, SU Class of 1914, in 1955 go honor coaches James Ten Eyck of Syracuse, Charles Courtney of Cornell and Richard Glendon of Navy. Goes coxed the Syracuse varsity eight that won the IRA Regatta in 1913.
The Orange continues to prepare for Eastern Sprints next Saturday, April 14, when it travels to Boston for the Conlan Cup against Boston University and Columbia on the Charles River.
