Just like in any other game, head coach Doug Marrone knows the Syracuse football team (1-2) is going to face some challenges, including a sold out crowd, when it travels to Minnesota on Saturday, Sept. 22nd (8 p.m., BTN). The Orange have been preparing this week for its first away game of the season against the undefeated Golden Gophers (3-0).
Â
"We have a challenging schedule," Marrone said. "It gets very challenging this week going to play a Minnesota team. It's pretty much a sold out crowd. Just like our first opponent, Northwestern, they are still undefeated. We are playing a Minnesota team that is undefeated right now. This will be a new challenge for the 2012 team, going into that environment. We need to make sure we're focused on what we need to do to compete and win a football game.
Â
The last time the Orange and the Golden Gophers met was in 2009 in Marrone's coaching debut. Minnesota edged Syracuse in overtime, 23-20, and currently holds the advantage in the series between the teams at 2-1.
Â
"We feel very comfortable with the direction in which we are heading," Marrone said. "We feel good from a standpoint of depth. We feel like we've upgraded our talent. We feel with the challenging schedule, people may not see that. We have a lot of hard work in front of us. The kids have been great from that standpoint, knowing and believing that. There is no false sense of security about who we are."
Â
The Orange offense has been explosive this season, totaling over 400 yards in each of its first three games. Leading the SU receivers is senior Marcus Sales with 25 catches for 350 yards and four touchdowns. The wide receiver has had a touchdown catch and at least 100 receiving yards in four consecutive games. Sales is currently listed on the Biletnikoff Award Watch List which recognizes the outstanding receiver in college football.
Â
"Marcus' consistency in practice has been outstanding and therefore has carried out onto the field," Marrone said. "Marcus has those skills. We are proud that he has been added to the Biletnikoff Watch list. It's well deserved. He's put a lot of hard work in. I'm extremely proud of Marcus Sales and where he is."
Â
SU will have a bye weekend on Sept. 29th and return home on Friday Oct. 5th to open up BIG EAST play against Pittsburgh (7 p.m., ESPN). Tickets are available online, in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B), or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX.
