Marona Closes Book on Playing Career

Defensive end Tyler Marona will no longer play football at Syracuse University due to suffering multiple concussions, beginning during his high school football career at St. Francis High School. After reviewing his concussion history, including the one concussion he sustained at Syracuse in August, Syracuse University team physician Dr. James Tucker disqualified Marona from further physical participation in football and/or any other contact sports at Syracuse University in September 2013.
"Unfortunately I have a history of head injuries, and eventually they add up," Marona said. "My future is most important to me, and I need to keep myself safe to live it out. I am retiring from football due to multiple concussions. I remain committed to the Syracuse program that believed in me. I thank God for the opportunity and will start my next dream – coaching football. I am excited for Syracuse Football to be successful forever."
Marona enrolled at Syracuse in August 2013 after playing the 2012 season at Pasadena City Community College. At Pasadena City CC, Marona recorded 25 tackles, including 11 solo, 4.5 for a loss of yards and two sacks, in 10 games. In high school, Marona earned 2011 Pasadena Prep Sports All-Mission Second Team honors after leading his team to a 9-3 record.
"We are extremely disappointed that Tyler will not be able to play the game he has such great passion for any longer," said head coach Scott Shafer. "In this day and age, you have to make the right decision with an injury like this because of the way it impacts the rest of your life. I am impressed that he has accepted this as the 'new normal' and respect that he is ready and willing to help the program in another way. We look forward to Tyler working with us as a student coach."
The 2013 Orange will host Wake Forest on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 12:30 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. Former Syracuse quarterback Donovan McNabb will be honored at the game with the retirement of his jersey and the 2013 LetterWinners of Distinction will be recognized.
Tickets for the Wake Forest game are available starting at $29. They can be ordered online, by phone (1-888-DOMETIX) or in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office. For $75 fans can take advantage of the Tops Family Four Pack, which includes two adult tickets, two youth tickets, a $5 concession voucher, free cushion seats with seatback for the game, and one Skytop parking pass.
