SYRACUSE, N.Y- Syracuse punter, sophomore Riley Dixon (Blossvale, N.Y.), and women's cross country runner Jessie Petersen (Carlmont, Calif.) team up to form this week's Orange Scholar-Athletes of the Week for Oct. 28, 2013.
Dixon was recently nominated for the Ray Guy Award, which identifies the nation's top collegiate punter. With an average of 44.0 yards per punt, which ranks 14th nationally and second in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Dixon earned a spot on the 2013 Phil Steele Midseason All-ACC third team. He has booted the ball 50 yards or more nine times, including a school record 75-yard punt against Clemson on Oct. 5. Dixon has also pinned 12 punts inside the 20-yard line. The sophomore is a three time member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and was a 2012 BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection. He is pursuing a degree in accounting in the Whitman School of Management.
Petersen has been one of the top performers for the nationally ranked No. 19 Orange. A fifth-place finish by Petersen in a time of 15:56.70 at the Harry Lang Invitational (4,200-meters) helped Syracuse take first place in the season-opening event. She was the top Syracuse runner and third overall at the Dartmouth Invitational, covering the 6,000-meter course in 21:06.43. Most recently, the junior had a strong showing at the Wisconsin adidias Invitational, where she took 54th overall, good for second on the squad. With the help of Petersen, SU placed 11th in the race and entered the national polls the following week for the first time this season.
Petersen has been included on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester at SU. She is majoring in health and exercise science in the School of Education.
Following a bye week, Dixon and the football team (3-4, 1-2 ACC) return home for an Atlantic Coast Conference tilt with Wake Forest on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 12:30 p.m. Tickets are available online, in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B), or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX. Petersen will look to lead the women's cross country team in its debut at the ACC Championship in Kernersville, N.C. on Friday, Nov. 1 at 10 a.m.
