BALTIMORE – Four members of the Syracuse men's lacrosse team have been named to the 2014 Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook Preseason All-America Team. Junior defenseman Sean Young headlined the Orange's selections, earning third-team honors. Redshirt junior midfielder Henry Schoonmaker senior long-stick midfielder Matt Harris and redshirt sophomore defenseman Brandon Mullins received honorable mention nods.
Â
Young was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team in 2013 for his role in holding Denver star attackman Wes Berg without a shot in the semifinals. Young started 16 games last season and picked up 11 ground balls and caused eight turnovers.
Â
A 2013 USILA Honorable Mention All-American, Schoonmaker totaled 18 goals and five assists a member of the second midfield a year ago. He turned in a sensational performance in the Orange's 13-12 victory at Princeton last April 6, scoring a career-high six points (four goals, two assists) on his way to winning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Â
Harris, one of this year's co-captains, was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team in 2013. He led the Orange in caused turnovers (29) and finished second on the squad with 52 ground balls. Harris chipped in offensively as well, tallying two goals and one assist in his junior campaign.
Â
Mullins was on the verge of a breakout year when he went down with a season-ending knee injury against Virginia last March. Prior to getting hurt, he helped hold Cavalier attackman Nick O'Reilly scoreless in a 9-8 Syracuse victory. Overall, Mullins played just three games last season. As a rookie in 2012, Mullins recovered 27 ground balls and caused 13 turnovers while bumping back and forth between close defense and long-stick midfield.
Â
Syracuse tied the team record for wins last season, going 16-4 and advancing to the NCAA title game for the 17th time in program history. The Orange returns eight of its top 10 scorers from last year's squad, including junior Kevin Rice who was second on the team with 55 points (23 goals, 32 assists).
Â
Recently voted the No. 2 team in the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook Top 20, the Orange hits the practice field in January for the start of the 2014 season.
