The 42nd annual Syracuse University Men's Basketball Hardwood Banquet, sponsored by TK99, will be held on Sunday, March 10 at the OnCenter in Syracuse. Tickets are $85 per person and $800 per table of 10. Proceeds benefit the Conrad McRae Endowed Men's Basketball Scholarship and the men's basketball job program.
Â
The Vic Hanson Medal of Excellence will be awarded to Etan Thomas '00. The honor is given to an individual or individuals who have ties to the men's basketball program and have made outstanding contributions to college basketball.
Â
Thomas was a four-year letterwinner for the Orange. He scored 1,340 points in his tenure and led the team in scoring average in his senior campaign with a 13.6 mark. Thomas also led the team in rebound average as a senior (9.3) and finished with 847 career boards.
Â
Known for his shot-blocking skills, Thomas is still the program leader in rejections with 424. He topped the team all four years. Thomas had nine blocks in a game three different times, a school record that was broken a season ago.
Â
Thomas accumulated a number of BIG EAST Conference honors. He was the league's most improved player and a third-team all-conference selection as a sophomore. Thomas followed that up with back-to-back defensive player of the year recognition. He was second-team All-BIG EAST as a junior and a first-team pick as a senior.
Â
Thomas was one of 25 players selected to the SU All-Century Men's Basketball Team, by fan-vote, during the 1999-00 season. Thomas graduated with a degree in business management.
Â
He went on to be selected 12th overall in the 2000 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks.
After missing his rookie season with an injury, he was traded to Washington. Thomas also played for Oklahoma City and Atlanta in a career that included 409 NBA games.
Â
The Hardwood Banquet is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. with a reception that includes a silent auction featuring unique sports memorabilia, a player autograph session and an opportunity to bid on having players sit at your table. Dinner will begin at 6:00 p.m.
