ORLANDO, Fla. – The Syracuse softball team (5-6) split the first day of competition at the ESPN Rise Citrus Classic registering a 10-0 shutout against Boston College (4-2) and falling to LSU in closely contested 7-6 game at Wide World of Sports Complex.
Rebounding from a tough loss earlier in the afternoon, the Orange came out swinging against the Golden Eagles as freshman Corinne Ozanne sent a single to right field to send in senior Veronica Grant and junior Shirley Daniels, who both walked. By the second inning, a single from Grant brought in Stacy Kuwik, who reached on a pair of BC fielding errors. Ozanne followed with a base hit up the middle driving home Daniels to stretch the SU lead to 4-0.
Without either team putting up any runs in the third inning, Syracuse racked up another pair of runs in the fourth as Daniels came in on another fielding error on the Golden Eagles and Grant followed from a sac fly by sophomore Julie Wambold.
With the score at 6-0, the Orange bats really came alive in the sixth inning as junior Jasmine Watson drove in Grant with a double up the middle. With Watson and Wambold on base, Ozanne followed with her first collegiate home run of the season, scoring both for a solid 10-0 lead that SU held on to for the victory.
Overall, Ozanne led the team going four-for-four against the Golden Eagles, adding six RBI in addition to her home run.
Earlier in the day, Syracuse could not emerge triumphantly from a back-and-forth battle with LSU, even with the help of a two-home run performance from Grant.
After Wambold and freshman Ozanne were hit by pitches, sophomore Mary Dombrowski advanced both on a walk. With the bases loaded, another one of LSU pitcher Meghan Patterson's pitches clipped senior Morgan Nandin, bringing Wambold home for an early 1-0 lead in the second inning.
The Tigers responded with a pair of back-to-back doubles down the left foul line for a run to tie the score and then added a single from Bianka Bell to score another run. Syracuse didn't give up though, as Nandin sent a single up the middle for a base hit with just one out in the fourth inning. With senior Ashley Dimon on first and Nandin on second after two fielder's choices, Grant drove both home with her first home run of the afternoon to set the score at 4-2.
Answering back, Rikki Alcaraz hit a single to centerfield to send runners on second and third home and then stole second. Advancing on an SU fielding error, Sandra Simmons brought in Alcaraz to lift the Tigers ahead 5-4.
On the next Orange at bat, leadoff hitter junior Shirley Daniels walked and stole second, just before Grant stepped up to the plate to slam her second homer of the game. The two runs pulled SU back on top by one at 6-5.
Syracuse couldn't shake LSU, as another set of consecutive doubles from the Tigers sent in two more runners, settling the final score at 7-6.
Despite the outcome, Grant was two-for-four against the Tigers with the pair of homers and five RBI, marking her second multi-home run game of the season.
The Orange is back in action tomorrow afternoon, taking on Longwood at 2:30 p.m. and Texas at 4:45 p.m. on day two of the Citrus Classic.
