The Syracuse University athletics program is the fifth most popular sports organization in New York, according to a new Siena College Research Institute survey announced today. In a statewide survey, New York residents list the Orange as the fifth most popular sports organization in the state, beating out the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, Brooklyn Nets, Buffalo Sabres, New York Rangers and New York Islanders. Loyalty to the Orange ranks only behind the first-ranked New York Yankees, followed by the New York Giants, New York Mets and New York Knicks.
"This is just one more example that Syracuse is truly New York's College team," said Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross.
The Orange athletics program is enjoying the most successful year in school history, ranking 31st in the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings. Six teams have earned NCAA Championship invitations, including the men's basketball team and the field hockey squad which each advanced to the Final Four. SU's football, men's cross country, men's soccer and women's basketball teams also played in the post-season.
