With summer workouts beginning this week, the Syracuse football team is focusing in on the 2013 season. While preparation has begun for the Orange's inaugural season in the ACC, senior Macky MacPherson has garnered recognition by being named to the Rimington Trophy 2013 Spring Watch List. The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding center.
MacPherson was named to both the 2012 Spring and Fall Rimington Trophy watch lists. The Syracuse, NY native has blocked for a 1,000-yard rusher the past three seasons and has been the starting center as both a sophomore and a junior. This past season, MacPherson was a part of the Orange offense that set school records for total offense (6,188 yards), total offense per game (476.0), most plays (1,028), passing yards (3,757), completions (295), passing yards per game (289.0) and touchdown passes (26).
MacPherson is one of 44 players on the list and one of 17 returning honorees. Currently in its 14th season, the Rimington Trophy is named after Dave Rimington, who was a consensus first-team All-America center at the University of Nebraska in 1981 and 1982, during which time he became the Outland Trophy's only double winner as the nation's finest college interior lineman.
The Rimington Trophy committee uses four teams to determine a winner: the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), Walter Camp Foundation, Sporting News and Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). The award is sponsored by the Boomer Esiason Foundation which is dedicated to discovering a cure for cystic fibrosis. The winner will be honored at the Rimington Trophy Presentation banquet at the Rococo Theater in Lincoln, Nebraska on January 11, 2014.
All fans are invited to join 'Orangenation Rising,' a state of mind where passion, tradition and die-hard loyalty intersect, by renewing their season tickets or purchasing new 2013 season tickets. Fans can use the internet (SUAthletics.com), telephone (888-DOME-TIX), or visit the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B). Season tickets start at just $99 each.
