FOR STARTERS
- Florida State has been a member of the ACC since the 1991-92 academic year. It was previously in the Metro Conference from 1976-77 to 1990-91 in every sport but football, which was independent.
- There are a total of 18 varsity sports at Florida State.
- Florida State teams have won a total of 12 national championships: three in men's track and field (2006, 2007, 2008); two in Football (1993, 1999); two in men's gymnastics (1951, 1952); two in softball (1981, 1982); and one each in women's golf (1981), women's indoor track and field (1984) and women's outdoor track and field (1985).
- FSU's football team plays at Doak Campbell Stadium, which seats 82,300, while its basketball teams play at the Donald L. Tucker Center (12,100).
- Florida State's athletic teams have been known as the Seminoles since 1947 student vote. The symbol represents Osceola, an actual Seminole historical figure. The use of the name by the university is officially sanctioned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida.
LITTLE'S SENIOR DAY
Bud Poliquin of the Post-Standard wrote in 2011 about how Little almost didn't play for Syracuse in that game against the Seminoles in 1966. In what Little calls the most memorable game of his career, he shares what happened leading up to that game and how is happy he made the decision he did. Check out Poliquin's interview here.
Syracuse and FSU have met on the gridiron five times since that first meeting with the Seminoles winning them all: 1978 (28-0), 1989 (41-10), 1991 (46-14), 2004 (17-13) and 2005 (38-14).
HARDCOURT SUCCESS VS. SEMINOLES
Syracuse beat Florida State in non-conference men's basketball games for three consecutive seasons (1989-90 to 1991-92).
On Feb. 3, 1990 in Orlando, Billy Owens scored 23 points and Derrick Coleman had a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds as the No. 7 Orangemen won, 90-69.
On Feb. 18, 1991 at the Carrier Dome, Dave Johnson led SU with 26 points, Owens added 16 and LeRon Ellis had 15. Conrad McRae hauled in 13 boards as the No. 7 Orangemen won, 88-79.
On Dec. 3, 1991, at the Omni in Atlanta, Johnson poured in 29 points and Lawrence Moten added 18 as Syracuse cruised to an 89-71 victory.
The fourth and most recent meeting between the two teams was the Seminoles lone win. It came on March 12, 1997 at the Carrier Dome, 82-67, in the NIT first round. Otis Hill led Syracuse with 16 points. Randell Jackson led FSU with 20 points.
ON THE DIAMOND
Though the Seminoles lead the series, 7-2, in softball vs. SU, Tanya Rose led Syracuse to a 2-1 upset victory vs. No. 15 FSU on Feb. 19, 2005 in Tallahassee. Rose singled and scored in the first inning and hit a solo home run in the fifth that proved to be the difference.
The teams met again later that 2005 season, on March 19, and once again the Orange upset the then-No. 22 Seminoles, 4-3, at the Kia Classic in Fullerton, Calif. Erin Downey struck out 11 FSU batters and did not surrender a walk to earn the eight-inning victory in the circle. SU shortstop Alexis Switenko was 2-for-2 and walked twice.
