MCNABB'S DOME FAREWELL
The last time SU beat Miami was one of the more memorable games ever at the Carrier Dome. On Nov. 28, 1998, Syracuse demolished the Hurricanes, 66-13, on senior day to win the BIG EAST Championship. Senior captain Donovan McNabb, in his final game at the Loud House, threw two touchdown passes and ran for three more, including a 51-yarder, to lead the Orangemen. SU took control early, scoring 24 first-quarter points and taking a 45-7 halftime lead, much to the delight of the crowd of 49,521.
McNabb finished with 99 yards rushing, while Kyle McIntosh and James Mungro ran for 84 and 74, respectively, to lead the Orangemen's ground game that piled up 318 yards.
Kevin Johnson returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and Giovanni DeLoatch returned a fumble 27 yards for a score.
In the first ever football game between the schools, on Nov. 18, 1960 in Coral Gables, Syracuse legend Ernie Davis rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries to lead SU to a 21-14 victory in the final game of his junior season. The win capped off a 7-2 season for the Syracuse coming off its undefeated 1959 National Championship season.
HEISMAN WINNER LEADS SU TO LIBERTY BOWL WIN
The teams met again the following season in the 1961 Liberty Bowl on Dec. 16, 1961 at Philadelphia Municipal Stadium. In his final game in a Syracuse uniform and fresh off his historic Heisman Trophy win, the All-American running back piled up 140 rushing yards to lead the Orangemen to a 15-14 win on a 22-degree day. Davis scored SU's first touchdown and the second was on a play-action fake to him resulting in a Dave Sarette to Dick Easterly scoring pass. After his career-high 30 carries, the "Elmira Express" said after the game, "I could have carried 20 more times if it had been necessary." He signed a contract with the Cleveland Browns less than two weeks later.
HAK & GMAC GIVE BIG EAST PARTING GIFT
In the final time they played as BIG EAST foes in men's basketball, No. 25 Syracuse beat Miami, 91-74, in Coral Gables on Feb. 16, 2004. Hakim Warrick tied BIG EAST and school records with his 11-for-11 shooting performance in which he finished with 27 points. Current SU assistant coach Gerry McNamara scored 23 points, including five 3-pointers, and dished out a game-high six assists. The game was Jim Boeheim's 900th as head coach. He recorded his 900th win this past season.
Syracuse has not played Miami since it left the BIG EAST after the 2003-04 season. The 'Canes won the final meeting on Feb. 18, 2004, 85-65, at Manley Field House. The Orange's last win came on Jan. 25, 2003, 62-59, in Miami. Julie McBride scored SU's final seven points, including the winning basket with 19 seconds left to complete the comeback win. The junior finished with 22 points, while Shannon Perry added 16 points and 16 rebounds.
BURCH'S BIG GAME
Syracuse faced Miami every season in women's soccer from 1999-2003. Syracuse won the first two meetings, while the 'Canes defeated the Orange in the final two contests between the two schools. The teams played to a 2-2 tie in 2002 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The first contest between the two schools took place in 1999 in Miami. Trisha Burch recorded five points to lead the Orange to a 6-1 victory. Burch's five points tie her for eighth and the six goals are tied for third on SU's single-game record lists.
