MASON, Ohio -- Syracuse rising senior Maddie Kobelt will compete against Alexandra Thurman of Miami University in the semifinals of the U.S. Open Midwest Sectional Qualifying Tournament at 1 p.m. today at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
Kobelt is 3-0 in sectional qualifying and defeated University of Illinois signee Alexis Casati 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. The winner of the Kobelt-Thurman match will face either Kasey Gardiner or top-seeded Nelle Youel in the final.
The winner of the Midwest Sectional advances to the championship of the U.S. Open National Playoffs, a series of tournaments that gives any player 14 years of age or older who meets the eligibility requirements an opportunity to qualify for the 2013 U.S. Open. The championship for women's singles will take place at Yale University from August 16-19 during the New Haven Open.
Kobelt posted a 15-9 overall singles record for the Orange last season, including a 15-8 mark in dual matches.
