Former Syracuse great Art Monk's induction into the NFF College Football Hall of Fame will be complete on August 28 when he enshrined in a ceremony in Atlanta. The enshrinement will honor a class of 24 of the greatest legends to play the game. Monk was officially inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in December at a ceremony that took place in New York City.
"We are excited to welcome college football fans from across the country to Atlanta for this event," said John Stephenson, president and CEO of Atlanta Hall Management. "We have made phenomenal headway on building the new Hall, and the event will provide us the perfect opportunity to showcase our plans for the new facility while honoring some of the game's greats."
LSU tailback Charles Alexander, Cal quarterback Steve Bartkowski, Notre Dame tight end Dave Casper, BYU quarterback Ty Detmer, Syracuse wide receiver Art Monk and coaches Philip Fulmer (Tennessee), Jimmy Johnson (Oklahoma State, Miami –Fla.) and R.C. Slocum (Texas A&M) headline the inductees who will be honored at the event. The full complement of Hall of Famers includes the members of the Football Bowl Subdivision class, who were formally inducted this past December during the 55th National Football Foundation Annual Awards Dinner in New York City, and the members of the Divisional class, who were announced in May. Tickets for the event, which will be open to the public, will go on sale in the coming weeks with information available at www.cfbhall.com.
"This year's class represents one of the most spectacular in the history of the Hall," said Steve Hatchell, the president & CEO of the National Football Foundation, which oversees the Hall and the selection of the inductees. "They are the first class to cross the threshold in Atlanta, and their incredible accomplishments are helping us draw attention to the amazing progress we have made building the new Hall."
Enshrinement will take place at the Omni Hotel at CNN Center, which directly overlooks the Hall construction site next to the Georgia World Congress Center and Centennial Olympic Park, in the heart of Atlanta.
Monk is the 10th Syracuse player to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, including (in chronological order), Joe Alexander (1954), Lynn 'Pappy' Waldorf (1966), Vic Hanson (1973), Ernie Davis (1979), Floyd Little (1983), Larry Csonka (1989), Jim Brown (1995), Tim Green (2001) and Don McPherson (2008). Seven coaches with stops at Syracuse are in the hall, including: Howard Jones (1951), Frank O'Neill (1951), Tad Jones (1958), Biggie Munn (1959), Bud Wilkinson (1969), Ben Schwartzwalder (1982) and Dick MacPherson (2009).
