MONTREAL - All 10 players who suited up for Syracuse found the bottom of the net and the Orange opened its Canadian tour by doubling up McGill, 80-40, at Love Competition Hall on Tuesday, Aug. 21.
Forward Jerami Grant scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead four Syracuse players in double-figures. C.J. Fair netted all 13 of his points in the first half, Tyler Ennis tallied 11 points in his first collegiate game and Trevor Cooney chipped in with 10 points.
Syracuse shot 30-of-71 (.423), while holding McGill to just 15-of-60 (.250) from the floor. SU held a 26-18 rebounding edge and outscored the Redmen 48-16 in the paint. The Orange forced 25 McGill turnovers and turned that into 27 points.
The Orange jumped out to a 15-1 lead just over five minutes into the game on the heels of nine consecutive points from Fair that included a baseline three and an ally-oop from Grant. SU held the Redmen without a field goal for the first five and a half minutes and Grant took over for the rest of the opening period, scoring six straight for SU to give the Orange a 21-6 lead at the end of the quarter.
Syracuse continued its strong play to open the second quarter, scoring 14 of the first 16 points to extend its lead to 35-8. Redmen guard Simon Bibeau nailed two quick three's to cut the deficit to 37-14, but the Orange responded with a 10-2 run to take a 47-16 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, McGill never got closer than 29 points and Syracuse held their largest lead of the game at 43 points following a baseline jumper from Coleman to make it 73-30.
Cooney had the hot hand in the closing half, scoring the Orange's last points of the third quarter with a dunk off a steal at midcourt and eight in-a-row at the beginning of the fourth, which included a pair from beyond the arc.
In addition to everyone scoring for the Orange, all players logged at least 11 minutes. Fair was limited to just 11 minutes with a lower left leg injury and didn't play in the second half as a precaution.
McGill was led by Bibeau who recorded 15 points for the Redmen.
Syracuse will be back in action on Thursday, Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. as the Orange continue their four-game swing in Canada with an exhibition against Bishops at Champlain College. The game will be broadcast by Time Warner Cable. Additionally, Time Warner Cable has agreed to allow the games to be streamed live by a separate pay-per-view option. The games can be accessed by going to SUathletics.com, and clicking on the "Special pay per view" option on the home page. The price for each game is $14.99 per game.
