COLLEGE PARK, Md. -Â Sophomore Brianna Butler scored 14 points and freshman Alexis Peterson scored 10 of career-high 12 points in the second half, but Syracuse women's basketball (12-5, 1-3 ACC) came up short at No. 6 Maryland (15-1, 3-0 ACC), 77-62, on Thursday night at the Comcast Center.
Â
Down 20 with 8:13 remaining following an Alyssa Thomas 3-point play, Syracuse went on an 11-1 run which consisted of seven-straight points by Peterson sandwiched around four points by fellow freshman Briana Day to make it a 10-point game with 4:47 left, 69-59. Back-to-back jumpers by Brene Moseley then spurred an 8-3 Terrapins run to close the game.

Â
After Maryland led by 14 at the half, a Coffey 3-pointer at the 14:41 mark cut the deficit to 10, 48-38, but the Terrapins then went on a 15-3 run over the next 3:48 to expand its lead to its largest of the game, 22 points, with a Katie Rutan layup making it 63-41 with 10:38 left.
Â
Both teams' shooters started the game sluggishly, with SU making two of its first eight shots while Maryland started 1-of-9. Led by a pair of Butler 3-pointers, the Orange took a 12-8 lead at the 13:36 mark on a Sykes drive and score, but the Terrapins responded with a 23-5 run over the next 6:39 to take a 31-17 lead with 6:32 left in the half.
