Â
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – For the third time this season, the No. 13 Syracuse field hockey team will play on consecutive days when it hosts No. 5 Louisville and faces Cornell on the road this weekend. In addition to the quick turnaround, Syracuse faces two teams with a combined 18-4 record on the 2014 season.
Â
The Orange will host Louisville in its third matchup with a top-five opponent this year on Saturday morning. The game is set to start at 11 a.m. at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
Â
Following its fourth ACC contest of the season, Syracuse will make the short trip to Cornell on Sunday afternoon. The in-state showdown will begin at 2 p.m. in Ithaca.
Â
Bradley's Bite
"It's going to be a big weekend. It will be a lot on the kids. We are prepared. We are ready for it. We are really looking forward to the opportunity to compete together two more times this weekend."
Â
Fresh Slice
It does not appear the jump from high school to college has fazed freshmen Annalena Ulbrich and Lieke Visser. Currently, Ulbrich leads the Syracuse field hockey team in goals scored and Visser ranks first on the team in scoring and total assists.
Â
A back for the Orange, Ulbrich has been a constant threat for opposing defense on penalty corners. The Hannover, Germany native has scored all eight of her goals on the year on the set pieces. In addition, she is the only freshman on the team to start in every game this season.
Â
Visser, a midfielder, can do it all in her first season on campus. She currently leads the team with 12 assists on the year, which is good enough for a 1.09 assists per game average. The Bunnik, Netherlands native leads the ACC in helpers per contest and ranks fourth in the country in that category. Columbia's Christina Freibott leads the nation with a 1.40 mark. In addition, Visser matched the program record with three assists against Ball State on Sept. 7.
Â
Not Down on the Corner
Syracuse has won its past two contests in large part due to the success of its penalty corner unit. The club has recorded 10 goals in its last two games, with half of those coming of the set play.
Â
The success of the unit's play is evident in the statistics. Senior back Jordan Page and freshman midfielder Lieke Visser lead the team in assists on the year and are the first two parts of the penalty corner equation. Freshman back Annalena Ulbrich is the usual recipient of Visser's inserts and Page's stops and ranks first on the squad in goals scored.
Â
Series Breakdown
Syracuse and Louisville will meet for the 11th time this weekend, while the meeting against Cornell marks the 29th game between the in-state foes. SU owns a 7-3 advantage against the Cardinals and a 26-2-1 edge versus the Big Red.
Â
In its most recent contest against Louisville, SU stymied the Cardinals, 3-0, on Sept. 29, 2012. It marked the team's fifth straight win against Louisville. Last season against Cornell, Syracuse was propelled to a 3-2 overtime victory behind Lauren Brooks' second goal of the day.
