
Orange Shuts Out Cornell, 5-0

Fourth straight victory for the Orange
ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 13 Syracuse field hockey team finished a perfect weekend with a 5-0 victory at Cornell on Sunday afternoon. With the win, Syracuse has won its past four contests, outscoring its opponents, 18-6.

"I am really proud of this team," head coach Ange Bradley said. "They have really embraced the Syracuse mentality and are executing the gameplans."
Freshman back Annalena Ulbrich led Syracuse (10-3, 1-3) with two goals on the day. Junior forward Emma Russell and freshmen midfielders Laura Hurff and Lieke Visser each contributed goals in the victory against Cornell (8-3, 3-0).

The Orange jumped out to an early advantage on the road. SU earned a penalty corner in the 12th minute of play. Visser inserted the ball to senior back Jordan Page. Page stopped the ball, setting up Ulbrich. Ulbrich completed the play for her ninth goal off a penalty corner in 2014.

Not even one minute later, Syracuse extended its lead to 2-0. A scrum erupted in front of the Cornell goal. Hurff emerged with the ball and slotted it into the net for her third goal in the past two days.

SU added on one goal in the final minutes of the opening half. Senior forward Lauren Brooks sent a pass to Russell in the 30th minute of play. Russell went top shelf, putting one high past the Big Red keeper to give the Orange a 3-0 edge headed into the halftime break.

Neither team recorded a goal in the first 20 minutes of the second period. Syracuse broke through in the 56th minute as Visser collected a rebound off a save and slotted it in the goal. The Bunnik, Netherlands native currently leads the squad in scoring with 28 points on seven goals and 14 assists. Her 14 assists in a single season ranks seventh in school history, as well.

Five minutes later, Ulbrich struck again off a penalty corner for the final tally of the game. The Hannover, Germany native once again connected with Page and Visser for her team-leading 10th goal of the 2014 campaign. With her second assist of the day, Page moved into fourth place in program history with 35 career assists.

Junior goalkeeper Jess Jecko registered her second shutout of the season behind six saves. Cornell junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Schaeffler stopped two shots on the day.

The squad returns to the pitch on Saturday afternoon when it takes on Wake Forest on the road. The ACC contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C.Â
