Second win in-a-row for the Orange
PRINCETON, N.J. – Junior forward Emma Russell scored in the 94th minute to propel the No. 13 Syracuse field hockey team to a 4-3 double-overtime victory at Princeton on Sunday afternoon. It marked the second time this season that Russell had tallied the game-winning goal in overtime for the Orange.
Â
"We played a really good game of hockey," head coach Ange Bradley said. "We battled back and forth. Princeton played a very good game. I am really proud of our kids. They endured and found a way to grit out a win at the end. That has been something we have been working on and talking about it, the toughness, and they did it. It was excited to see it. I am really happy and proud of our group."
Â
Russell scored the game-winning tally from the left post for her seventh goal of the 2014 campaign. Freshman back Annalena Ulbrich registered two scores for the Orange, while freshman midfielder Lieke Viiser had a goal and assist. Senior back Jordan Page had two assists, as well.
Â
"I want to thank the fans, we had a lot of alums and fans that came out to support us," added Bradley. "We had a huge, huge crowd of Syracuse people."
Â
Syracuse (8-3, 0-3) jumped out to an early lead at Princeton (3-7, 2-1), scoring in the second minute of action. Ulbrich opened scoring with a goal off a penalty corner. Page and Visser contributed assists on the play.
Â
The Orange was once again successful on a penalty corner in the 29th minute. Visser inserted the ball, Page served as the stopper, and Ulbrich completed the play for her second tally of the day. It marked her team-leading eighth goal of 2014. All eight of her goals this season have come off penalty corners.
Â
Princeton would cut the visiting Orange's lead to 2-1 at the very end of the first half. Senior back Cassidy Arner converted a penalty corner for the Tigers in the final minute of the opening 35 minutes of action.
Â
Out of the halftime break, Princeton would carry over its momentum from the first half. Junior forward Maddie Copeland would record two goals in the first five minutes of the second period to give Princeton a 3-2 edge.
Â
Visser would knot the score in the 48th minute. Ulbrich fired a shot on goal, but was turned away. Visser collected the rebound and placed it in the goal to tie the game.
Â
The score would remain tied for the final 22 minutes of regulation and the two teams would head to overtime. Neither team could break through in the first 15-minute extra period, setting up the theatrics for the Orange in the second overtime period.
Â
Syracuse outshot its opponent, 24-13. Junior goalkeeper Jess Jecko turned five shots aside, while her counterpart, Princeton junior goalkeeper Anya Gersoff, made 12 saves on the day.
