Rice, Mullins named to first team
BALTIMORE – Five members of the Syracuse men's lacrosse team have been named to the 2015 Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook Preseason All-America Team.
Â
Attackman Kevin Rice and defenseman Brandon Mullins headlined the Orange's selections, earning first-team honors. Attackman Randy Staats was named to the second team. Defenseman Sean Young picked up third-team laurels and midfielder Henry Schoonmaker received an honorable mention nod.
Â
Syracuse's five selections tied Johns Hopkins and Notre Dame for the third-most of any team. Denver led the way with seven honorees, while North Carolina had six.
Â
A USILA Second Team All-American and All-ACC pick in 2014, Rice started all 16 games for the Orange last year and led the team in points (80), assists (44) and was second in goals scored (36). Rice tallied at least one point in every game and recorded six games of at least seven points. Rice is seventh among active Division I players in career points per game (3.29).
Â
Like Rice, Mullins was also a 2014 USILA Second Team All-American and All-ACC performer. He started every game on close defense and collected 36 ground balls, while forcing 17 turnovers.
Â
Staats was third on the team in goals (33), second in assists (23) and second in points (56) in 2014. He finished fourth in the ACC and 12th nationally in scoring (4.0 points per game). A crafty finisher, Staats scored at least one goal in 12 of the 14 games he played last season, including four five-goal games.
Â
Young has started 32 consecutive games on defense. He totaled 15 ground balls and nine caused turnovers a year ago.
Â
Schoonmaker started 15 games last season and contributed 17 points on 15 goals and two assists. He posted five multi-goal games and scored the winner in overtime in Syracuse's 17-16 victory against Albany.
Â
Recently voted the No. 4 team in the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook Top 20, the Orange hits the practice field in January for the start of the 2015 season.
