MONTREAL – Former Syracuse men's soccer star Patrice Bernier has been named team captain of Major League Soccer's (MLS) Montreal Impact, the club announced last week. The captainship is one of many honors garnered by Bernier during his professional career, as he was also the team's MVP and Communitarian of the Year in 2012. In addition, the Quebec native was named to the 2013 MLS All-Star team.

"It is with honor and pride that I wear the captain's armband for the Montreal Impact," said Bernier. "At this stage of my career, having grown up here, this will be a very special experience for me and a new challenge that I am ready to take on. It's also nice to be recognized by the coaching staff for my leadership and what I bring to the team. It is now up to me to maintain the standard that was set by Davy Arnaud."
Â
In his first two seasons in MLS, Bernier has scored 13 goals and passed out 16 assists. He guided the Impact to the Amway Canadian Championship in 2013 before competing in two CONCACAF Champions League games.
Â
At Syracuse, Bernier was a member of the NSCAA All-Region First Team in 1999 and was a BIG EAST All-Rookie Team choice in 1998. He scored 16 points in 1998 and tallied 18 in 1999.

The Bernier-captained Impact begins MLS regular-season competition March 8 against FC Dallas.Â
