NEW YORK – Four Orange men's lacrosse players have been named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List, presented by Panama Jack. Senior Matt Harris, juniors Kevin Rice, Randy Staats and redshirt sophomore Dylan Donahue are all potential candidates for the award, which is presented to the college lacrosse player of the year.
In all, 52 players were named to the watch list that was announced at The Union Club in New York City last night by the Tewaaraton Award Foundation. The field will be narrowed to 25 nominees on April 24 and the five finalists will be announced on May 8. The finalists will be invited to the Tewaaraton Award ceremony May 29 at the Smithsonian Institute's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. where this year's winner will be announced.
The Orange's four potential candidates matched Virginia for the most of any one school.
A preseason honorable mention All-American, Harris is Syracuse's top long-stick midfielder. He has two goals, seven ground balls and three caused turnovers so far this season. For his career, Harris has collected 116 ground balls and he is third all-time at SU with 50 caused turnovers. In addition, Harris has 14 career points (eight goals, six assists), the fourth-best scoring total of any active Division I defender.
Rice is second on the Orange with 13 points (two goals, 11 assists) this year. He leads the ACC and ranks fourth nationally in assists per game (3.67). Rice dished out eight helpers in the team's season-opening win against Siena, one short of the Syracuse single-game record.
Donahue leads the Orange in both points (17) and goals (12). He currently ranks in the top 10 nationally in shooting percentage (2nd - .667), goals per game (4th – 4.0) and points per game (7th - 5.67). Against Siena, Donahue scored eight goals, the most ever for an SU player in a season opener.
A junior-college transfer from Onondaga Community College (OCC), Staats burst onto the scene with a five-goal, two-assist performance in SU's 17-16 win against Albany. He currently sits third on the Orange scoring chart with 12 points (seven goals, five assists).
The Tewaaraton Award has been presented each year since 2001. Syracuse attackman Mike Leveille won the award in 2008. He was the second Orange player to do so, joining 2002 and 2004 Tewaaraton winner Mike Powell. Cornell's Rob Pannell took home the trophy last year after leading the Big Red to the NCAA semifinals.
