Track Set To Compete in First-Ever ACC Championship

SYRACUSE, N.Y.—After a tremendous invitational season highlighted by six new school records, the Orange track and field team will travel south to Clemson, S.C. to compete in its first-ever Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Clemson University. The conference championships will take place at the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex beginning with the multi-event competition on Thursday, Feb. 27 at noon and ending with the awards ceremony on Saturday, March 1 at 4 p.m.

Last weekend, the Orange completed its pre-championship season schedule at the Cornell Marc Deneault Invitational in Ithaca, N.Y. and the Notre Dame Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Ind. At Cornell, the team was paced by wins from Jaquan Holland in the 200-meter, Donald Pollitt in the 60-meter hurdles, and Michelle Riley in the 800-meter. At Notre Dame, the women's distance medley relay, consisting of Sydney Leiher, Rebecca Robinson, Molly Malone, and Margo Malone, took third place in 11:14.06 to rank them 19th on the NCAA performance list.

Last year at the BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships held in Geneva, Ohio at the SPIRE Institute, the men took sixth place and the women finished ninth in the team standings. Donald Pollitt won the men's 60-meter hurdles with a facility-record time of 7.79. Jaquan Holland and Martin Hehir also recorded second place finishes in the 60-meter dash and the 3,000-meter run, respectively. The women's team was led by a second place finish from Shaina Harrison in the 60-meter dash and a third place finish by Lauren Penney in the 3,000-meter run.

The 2014 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships can be viewed live on ESPN3 starting Friday, Feb. 28 at 4 p.m. and Saturday, March 1 at noon. Last year the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships was hosted by Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. and Clemson took home the women's team title with 141.5 points while Virginia Tech won the men's team title with a total of 153 points.

Four former BIG EAST champions will be heading to Clemson, S.C. to represent the Orange. Last year, Donald Pollitt took first place at the 2013 Indoor BIG EAST Championships held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, setting the facility record with a time of 7.79. At the 2012 Indoor BIG EAST Championship held at the Armory in New York, N.Y., Frank Taylor won gold in the men's long jump with a leap of 7.44 meters. Sarah Pagano won the 2012 Outdoor BIG EAST Title in the 10,000-meter run in Tampa Bay, Fla. and Martin Hehir was the 2012 Cross Country BIG EAST Individual Champion at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y. to lead the men's cross country team in its last BIG EAST team title.

In its first year as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, Syracuse has already proven to be a competitive force. In SU's first-ever ACC Championship, the men's cross country team took the title with 64 points led by Martin Hehir's third place finish. The men's basketball team began its first year in the ACC with the strongest start in school history of 25-0 before losing to ACC opponent Boston College. Other sports have also posted impressive regular season ACC records, including winning conference seasons by the women's field hockey team and the women's basketball team.
