SYRACUSE, N.Y.—The Orange ice hockey team is set to host Lindenwood in the first round of the CHA Tournament in a best-of-three game series this weekend. The teams will meet on Friday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m., Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m. and Sunday, March 2 at 2 p.m. if necessary.
Admission to the games is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students and youth. Doors open approximately one hour before puck drop.
Syracuse just played the Lady Lions 11 days ago when they swept the weekend, which, at the time, placed them in third in the College Hockey America standings. This season SU is 3-1-0 against Lindenwood.
CHA TOURNAMENT HISTORY
• This is just the second year the CHA Tournament has included a first round. Last season the Orange defeated RIT in overtime in the first round to advance to the semifinal game.
• SU has been made it to the semifinal round every season since the program began in 2008-09 and has advanced to the title game three times including last year, losing each time to Mercyhurst.
• Winning the CHA Tournament will not guarantee a bid to the National Collegiate Women's Ice Hockey Championship though winner could receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. There are three automatic qualifiers (winners of WHEA, ECAC and WCHA) and five at-large bids for the eight-team field.
• Starting next season, the winner of the CHA Tournament could be an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament. This is the second year of a two-year waiting period since the conference added its sixth team to make it eligible for the automatic bid.
Â
THE ROAD AHEAD
• After dropping both contests with RIT last weekend, the Orange fell to fourth in the regular season CHA standings, putting Syracuse in a harder position to get to the CHA title game.
• Should SU defeat Lindenwood in the first round series, the Orange will have Mercyhurst up next, a team that it has never defeated in all of its six seasons.
• Syracuse could face either Robert Morris, RIT or Penn State in the CHA Championship depending on the results of this weekend and the semifinal round.
Â
FLANAGAN'S FROZEN FOURS
• While at the helm of St. Lawrence, head coach Paul Flanagan made four consecutive Frozen Four appearances and seven National Collegiate Women's Ice Hockey Tournament appearances in total.
• Flanagan is the ninth all-time winningest coach in women's college hockey with his 319 career victories.
• In his 15th season of coaching, and sixth at SU, Flanagan has a career record of 319-182-41.
• Flanagan holds a record of 89-99-17 in his six seasons at SU.
Â
ORANGE BY NUMBERS
• SU has won 10 games on the road, six at Tennity Ice Pavilion and two at the War Memorial.
• The Orange ends the regular season with a winning record in conference play and in the regular season for just the third time in program history. It is only the second time that both happened in the same season.
• Syracuse wins or ties 80 percent of the time when scoring before its opponent, wins 79 percent of the time when leading after the first period and wins 92 percent of the time when leading after the second period, losing only three when it took a lead after the first 20 minutes and only once when it had an advantage with one period remaining.
• With an active offense, SU rarely loses. The Orange is 13-3-1 when outshooting an opponent and 14-2-2 when it scores three or more goals in a contest. SU has also never lost a game when it holds its opponent to one goal or less.
