GREENSBORO, N.C. - Syracuse women's basketball sophomore Brittney Sykes has been named to the All-ACC Coaches' Second Team, Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford announced on Monday. The dynamic guard was selected in voting conducted by the conference's 15 head coaches.
Â
Sykes is one of only five underclassmen (freshman or sophomore) to be named to either the 10-member first team or five-member second team.
Â
Sykes was also named All-ACC Second Team on March 4 in voting by the ACC Blue Ribbon Panel, consisting of national and local media members, as well as school representatives.
Â
Syracuse's leading scorer and ranking among the ACC leaders throughout the season, Sykes' 16.7 points per game on 51 percent shooting to go with 4.9 rebounds per contest have led the Orange to a 22-9 overall record.
Â
Her 519 points and 196 field goals on the season are both the fifth-highest single-season totals in program history.
Â
Sykes scored a career-high 31 points vs. Virginia Tech on Feb. 6 at the Carrier Dome, tallying 21 of her points in the first half, the most by an SU player since 2009. She finished the game 13-of-19 shooting.
Â
The Newark, N.J. native had a 10-of-13 shooting performance vs. Virginia on Jan. 26 in which she scored 27 points with seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks.
Â
Sykes provided one of the Orange's most thrilling moments of the season on Dec. 21 at the Carrier Dome when she drove and scored at the buzzer to give Syracuse a 64-62 win over Saint Joseph's. It was the second buzzer-beating game-winning shot of her career. Her steal and 50-foot heave beat St. John's on Jan. 23, 2013 in her freshman season.
Â
Sykes and the Orange are currently preparing for the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Selection Show will air on Monday, March 17 at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
