Coach Shafer's Remarks | Defensive Coordinator Chuck Bullough's Comments
Syracuse's long winter is nearly over and there's a light at the end of the tunnel—spring football! Next week the Orange dusts off its pads for its annual spring practices to get a jumpstart on the 2014 season and head coach Scott Shafer has several goals in mind to get the team ready for the fall.
First and foremost, Shafer plans to foster competition among both players and coaches.
"Anytime you get into spring ball it's natural to have the offense go against the defense," Shafer said. "It turns into a civil war and we want to embrace that. We want the competition to be at a high level - that's one of our goals this spring. We're going to have a variety of situations that we'll go head-to-head in. We're also going to do it with the coaching staff. We'll have [offensive coordinator] George McDonald and [defensive coordinator] Chuck Bullough scheming against each other for a segment of practice to try and create competition."
After losing 19 players after last season and gaining 23, four of which will participate this spring, Shafer has made it a point to gain a sense of the identity of this year's squad to give direction to both the team and the coaching staff.
"We want to do a good job finding out who this team is. Every year you get a new group of kids running around and the identity is going to change. I'm looking forward to watching these kids develop as a team to see what their identity is going to be in this 2014 season."
"Last, but not least, we want to have fun. We want to enjoy the greatest game ever invented and enjoy coaching it as well."
Shafer announced on Tuesday that the Orange will be without five student-athletes during Spring football due to injury. Linebacker Luke Arciniega, defensive lineman John Raymon, safety Durell Eskridge and offensive lineman Nick Robinson are out due to lower body injuries, while defensive lineman Kennedy Kodua is out with an upper body injury. In addition, kicker Ross Krautman (lower body) and quarterback Mitch Kimble (lower body) will be limited during Spring practice. Offensive lineman Ivan Foy is suspended from football activity due to academics.
The season ticket renewal deadline is Friday, March 28 for one of the most exciting home schedules in recent history, including a visit to the Dome by defending national champion Florida State on October 11. The Orange will also host Villanova, Maryland, which is moving to the Big Ten, Louisville, in its first year in the ACC, NC State and defending ACC Coastal Division Champion Duke.
Season Tickets can be renewed online at Cuse.com, or by calling the 'Cuse ticket office at 1-888-DOMETIX.
