SYRACUSE, N.Y.—Freshman Taylor Poplawski matched her career-high four goals to help the No. 2/3 Orange lacrosse team (7-1) to a 17-12 victory over No. 4/5 Florida (8-2) on Saturday afternoon in the Carrier Dome. Poplawski finished with five points, also her career high, while Kayla Treanor scored three goals and helped on two to match Poplawski's point total.
SU shutout the Gators for the final 15:22 of the first half while scoring six goals to take the lead and extend it to more than Florida could handle for the remainder of the game. Poplawski, Treanor and Alyssa Murray each contributed two goals in the run.
Florida started a comeback in the middle of the second half, scoring five consecutive goals to come within three but Syracuse's work earlier in the game paid off and the Gators were unable to catch up to SU.
Six Syracuse players scored multiple goals in the game and seven had a multi-point game. The Orange beat the Gators in nearly every category, outshooting Florida 34-27, controlling the draw 20-11 and making five more successful clears.
The game was close for the first 16 minutes of play with the lead changing three times. Florida was the first to score and maintained a lead until the 14 minute mark of the first stanza, when Syracuse notched the game-tying goal and went on its six-goal run to pull away from the Gators. Poplawski started things off with an athletic move to get past a defender in front of the goal and toss one in to make it even at 3-3. Treanor followed suit less than 30 seconds later to take the lead 4-3, which the Orange would not squander for the game.
Florida again came out strong in the second half, scoring two within the first two minutes of play to come within three goals. The teams then exchanged goals but Syracuse fired three into the back of the net to take a six-point advantage with 23 minutes to play. After SU took its largest lead of the game, 15-7, Florida started a comeback run, netting five consecutive goals to get back within three with 6:54 to play. Syracuse had the last say, however, scoring two more to take a decisive 17-12 win.
Senior Alyssa Costantino made her first start in goal for the Orange. She finished with nine saves to earn her first victory of the season.
The Orange is back in action on Tuesday, March 18 in the Carrier Dome to take on Harvard at 7 p.m.
