The Orange seniors took to the field one more time at Syracuse, this time to prove themselves to NFL scouts at SU's annual Pro Day. Twenty-nine different teams from the league were in attendance on Wednesday afternoon in Manley Field House.
Â
"Numbers-wise and how they performed, they did as well as guys that we have had go very high in the draft," strength and conditioning coach Will Hicks said. "We've got a pretty good history of having our kids perform well at these days.
Â
"We're known for having good pro days because we try and do it the right way and try to do it first-class. It's part of the Syracuse experience," Hicks said. "Part of playing at a school like Syracuse is that when we send out what day we're holding Pro Day, we know that just about every NFL team is going to be here because, in the tradition of Syracuse, they're coached the right way, they're taught the right way and that's why we have a lot of guys end up in the NFL."
Â
Jay Bromley participated in only a few drills today after a good showing at the NFL Combine in February.
Â
"I talked to Chandler Jones and Shamarko Thomas," Bromley said. "All of those guys gave me great advice to do. They said to stay calm and work hard and you never know what's going to happen. The defensive line drills that Coach Daoust put me through help me out a lot. He's really coached me up on what to improve on and things I need to continually improve upon."
Â
Jerome Smith, who was looking to improve upon his performance at the Combine, had a good showing on his home turf.
Â
"It was a good workout for me," Smith said. "I got better at everything since the Combine. My numbers at the Combine were horrible so I knew I had to come back here and redo everything. I did well. I trained a little bit harder and I got back with Coach Hicks, who is a great trainer. He got us all ready to get after this thing. I redid everything. I even did height and weight again. Everything turned out good."
Â
One of the best showings of the day was by Marquis Spruill, who was in front of scouts for the first time after not receiving an invitation to the Combine.
Â
"I just wanted to show my raw speed and athleticism," Spruill said. "I don't have a big name like some other linebackers that go to bigger schools, but they came here and saw what I could do and they were pretty pleased. I achieved my goal for the most part."
