ACC Release
GREENSBORO, N.C. - In its inaugural season in the ACC, Syracuse women's basketball's Brittney Sykes became the Orange's first-ever All-ACC honoree on Tuesday when she was named to the all-conference second team in voting conducted by the ACC Blue Ribbon Panel. The dynamic sophomore guard leads Syracuse in scoring at 17.1 points per game.
Â
Sykes is one of just four underclassmen named to the All-ACC first or second teams. This is her second regular-season conference honor of her career. She was named to the 2013 BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.
Â
Sykes has helped lead the Orange to a 21-8 regular season record, including a 10-6 mark in conference play, making SU the No. 5 seed in this week's ACC Tournament in Greensboro, N.C. She goes into the tournament with 495 points on the season, just five away from becoming the fifth player in program history to record a 500-point season. It would mark the eighth time the feat has been accomplished.
Â
Along with her team-best scoring average, which ranks 13th in the conference, Sykes shoots 51.8 percent overall and averages 4.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.6 steals on the season. She has scored in double figures 26 times in 29 games, while scoring 20 or more nine times.
Â
Sykes scored a career-high 31 points vs. Virginia Tech on Feb. 6 at the Carrier Dome, tallying 21 of her points in the first half, the most by an SU player since 2009. She finished the game 13-of-19 shooting.
Â
The Newark, N.J. native had a 10-of-13 shooting performance vs. Virginia on Jan. 26 in which she scored 27 points with seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks.
Â
Sykes provided one of the Orange's most thrilling moments of the season on Dec. 21 at the Carrier Dome when she drove and scored at the buzzer to give Syracuse a 64-62 win over Saint Joseph's. It was the second buzzer-beating game-winning shot of her career. Her steal and 50-foot heave beat St. John's on Jan. 23, 2013 in her freshman season.
