Player pool includes current SU junior Randy Staats
ONONDAGA NATION, N.Y. – Junior Randy Staats and five Syracuse lacrosse alums were named to the 44-man Iroquois Nationals training team on Thursday, March 6. In addition to Staats, Cody Jamieson, Brett Bucktooth, Jeremy Thompson, Sid Smith and Marshall Abrams are also competing for spots on the final Iroquois roster for the upcoming 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship in Denver this July.
A two-time NJCAA Offensive Player of Year at Onondaga Community College (OCC), Staats has nine goals and seven assists in his first year with the Orange. Staats' previous international experience includes competing for the 2012 Iroquois U-19 team that upset Team USA in pool play, the first field lacrosse victory for the Iroquois at any level against the Americans.
Jamieson played for the Orange in 2009 and 2010 before going on to star with the Rochester Knighthawks of the National Lacrosse League (NLL). He scored the game-winning goal in overtime of the 2009 NCAA championship game versus Cornell, and posted 28 goals and 13 assists to earn USILA Honorable Mention All-America honors as a senior in 2010.
Bucktooth (2003-06) was a two-time All-American at Syracuse. He led the Orange in both points (55) and goals (37) in 2006.
One of the nation's most versatile midfielders during his college career, Thompson was an All-BIG EAST First Team selection in 2010 and 2011 and received All-America honors after both seasons. He totaled 33 goals and 20 assists in his career and was one of SU's primary faceoff men.
Smith (2008-09) and Abrams (1997-2000) are two of the most decorated defenders in program history. Smith was a two-time All-American. He keyed an SU defense that gave up less than eight goals per game both years and won two NCAA championships. Abrams earned All-America honors three times, including first-team recognition in 2000. In addition, Abrams was awarded the 2000 William C. Schmeisser Award as the country's top defenseman.
A record 38 nations are scheduled to compete in this year's world championship. The Iroquois are in the Blue Division and they will face Australia, Canada, England, Japan and the United States during pool play for a spot in the championship bracket. The Iroquois are expected to release their final world championship roster in June.
