The Orange earns its first regular-season No. 1 ranking in program history.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse is ranked No. 1 in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll released on Monday, April 14. It marks the first time the Orange has been atop the poll during the regular season in program history. Syracuse moved up one spot to No. 2 in this week's Brine media poll.
"Our players are embracing being ranked as the top team in the country but it really only matters who is No. 1 at the end of the year," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "This only motivates our team to work harder to stay on top."
The Orange, which is coming off a 12-9 win over previous No. 1 and defending national champion North Carolina, earned 180 first-place votes and 389 points in the coaches poll. Maryland is right behind with 386 points. The Terrapins received 220 first-place votes. North Carolina dropped to No. 3, while Florida and Northwestern round out the top five. ACC schools make up six of the top 10 teams in the country.
Maryland is No. 1 in this week's Brine media poll. The Terrapins earned six first-place votes and 176 points. The Orange received three first-place votes and 173 points. North Carolina is third, followed by Florida and Johns Hopkins.
The Orange's previous regular-season highest ranking was No. 2, which it accomplished in 2012. SU was ranked No. 1 in Inside Lacrosse's 2013 preseason poll. The lacrosse team becomes the second women's program at Syracuse to be ranked No. 1 in the nation. The field hockey squad was ranked No. 1 in 2008 and 2012.
Syracuse (13-1) takes the field for the first time as the No. 1 team when it travels to Ithaca, N.Y. to take on Cornell on Tuesday, April 15 at 7 p.m.
