ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 17 Syracuse men's rowing team finished third in the varsity eight race and third in overall points as No. 8 Cornell successfully defended its home race course to beat the Orange and No. 9 Navy for the Goes and Stagg trophies on Saturday morning in Ithaca.
In the morning's marquee event, the V8 race for the Goes Trophy, the Big Red (6:01.7) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, beating the second-place Midshipmen (6:05.0), who won last season's Goes race in Annapolis, by 3.3 seconds and bested the third-place Orange (6:08.3) by 6.6 ticks.
"In the varsity eight, we made some improvements," head coach Dave Reischman said. "It was our best effort on the race course to this point, but we got beat by two better crews. We have to continue to work hard and scratch and claw any bit of speed we can gain."
The crews maintained their positions throughout the duration of the race after Cornell established a lead in the opening 250 meters with Navy second and SU third, though the Orange gained on the Midshipmen in the second half of the race.
"I thought we rowed a good a third 500, Reischman said. "We got down in the second 500. We then made some in-roads into them, but didn't have anything left down the stretch."
Syracuse also finished third in the 2V8 race, as Navy (6:07.1) took the victory by five seconds over second-place Cornell (6:12.1) and 7.8 seconds ahead of the Orange (6:14.9).
The Orange took second place in both the 3V8 and 4V8 races, both wins for the Midshipmen, while Cornell finished third.
The crews raced in a gusting and building headwind over the entire course, particularly in the final 1,000 meters. There was minimal to no current on the Cayuga Lake Inlet.
The Goes Trophy has been contested by the Orange, Big Red and Midshipmen since 1956. It was created by Clifford "Tip" Goes, SU Class of 1914, in 1955 to honor coaches James Ten Eyck of Syracuse, Charles Courtney of Cornell and Richard Glendon of Navy. Goes coxed the Syracuse varsity eight that won the IRA Regatta in 1913.
The Orange will be back in action next Saturday when they host their lone home regatta of the season at the James A. Ten Eyck Memorial Boathouse. Syracuse will be taking on Boston University and Columbia for the Conlan Cup.
