The Syracuse offense passed for 413 yards and four touchdowns to hold off the Syracuse defense and emerge the victor of the 2014 Spring Game, 34-27, in the Carrier Dome. Sophomore quarterback Austin Wilson passed for two touchdowns while sophomore Mitch Kimble and freshman A.J. Long each completed one scoring toss. Junior Ashton Broyld and senior Jeremiah Kobena caught two touchdowns each.
Senior kicker Alex Hodgkinson converted both of his field goal attempts, covering 23 and 28 yards, respectively.
Senior Terrel Hunt was sharp in his time running the offense, completing 12-of-15 passes for 95 yards. Long engineered the game's first touchdown drive, finishing it off on a six-yard pass to Broyld. Long connected on 10-of-15 passes for 82 yards. Mitch Kimble teamed with Kobena on a 15-yard scoring play. Kimble ended up 7-of-10 for 112 yards.
Wilson did not enter the game until after the intermission but excelled, completing all six of his attempts for 124 yards and the two scores. The first came on an 18-yard pass to Kobena while the second featured the elusive running of Broyld, who turned a short pass into a 45-yard touchdown.
Broyld led all pass-catchers with eight receptions for 126 yards. Senior Adrian Flemming caught five passes for 19 yards, sophomore Brisley Estime had four receptions for 104 yards, including a 64-yard play, and Kobena had three catches for 45 yards. Fifteen different players had receptions on the afternoon.
Syracuse's offense operated at a rapid pace with the play clock rarely a factor during the scrimmage. In addition to the 46 throws on the afternoon, the Orange mixed in 28 runs. Junior George Morris led the ground game with 44 yards on five carries.
Sophomore safety Chauncey Scissum and senior linebacker Josh Kirkland led the defensive effort with seven tackles each. Kirkland had two tackles for losses, including a quarterback sack. Senior safety Ritchy Desir had an interception to go with six stops, senior linebacker Cameron Lynch had six tackles and junior defensive end Ron Thompson finished with six stops.
The scimmage featured conventional scoring methods for the offense -- six points for a touchdown, three for a field goal and one for an extra point. The defense was able to get on the board by scoring a touchdown (seven points), creating a turnover (six points), causing a three-and-out (three points), or stopping a possession on downs (1 point).
Two halves were conducted with a short halftime break in between. The team behind at the half, the defense, was able to add points by an intermission punt challenge. Senior Riley Dixon was given four punts from the 45-yard line and earned points for having the punt downed inside the 15- (one point), the 10- (two points) or the 5-yard line (three points).
An enthusiastic crowd of 4,071 was on hand in the Dome for an event that featured the scrimmage, a post-game autograph session with the team, and the opportunity to "select-a-seat" for the upcoming season. Coach Scott Shafer welcomed the gathering and reiterated his pledge to buy a ticket for each ticket purchased prior to May 30 for the season opener with Villanova.
