Men's Soccer Finds Success in Spring Competition

Orange draws against two pro teams
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Head coach Ian McIntyre and the SU men's soccer team have had a busy spring schedule, working to build upon the 2013 campaign and prepare for SU's second season in the ACC.
Â
So far this spring the team has tied a pair of professional clubs. On March 7, the Orange battled the Rochester Rhinos of the United Soccer League (USL) to a 0-0 draw. Last weekend, Syracuse played the North American Soccer League's (NASL) Ottawa Fury FC to a 2-2 stalemate.
Â
"It is always a good exercise to measure oneself against a professional team and we will take many positive out of this 0-0 tie," McIntyre said of his team's performance against Rochester. "We realize that we will be able to polish up our attacking play with additional work in practice this spring and we know that we have goals in this team."
Â
Against Ottawa, All-ACC performer Emil Ekblom scored twice in the first half and Syracuse led the Fury at the intermission, 2-1.
Â
"It was an excellent test against a talented, experienced side and our boys played some good attacking soccer throughout the match," said McIntyre. "We had periods of the game when we worked the ball well to create several other goal-scoring chances."
One of the day's highlights was seeing former Orange midfielder Kenny Caceros (2007-09) take the field for the Fury. Signed by Ottawa earlier that day, Caceros played the game's last 10 minutes against his alma mater.
Â
Syracuse continues its spring slate when it travels to former BIG EAST rival St. John's April 5 for a 2 p.m. match. SU concludes the spring with a pair of home round-robin exhibitions versus Siena and Buffalo on April 12 and versus Colgate and 2013 NJCAA national champion Herkimer County Community College (HCCC) April 15.
