SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 16 Syracuse men's rowing team's varsity eight finished third in its lone home race of the season on Saturday morning at the James A. Ten Eyck Memorial Boathouse as No. 10 Boston University won the Conlan Cup and Lusins Trophy in the three-way regatta between the Orange, Terriers and No. 12 Columbia.
The Orange's second and third varsity eights each finished second behind the Terriers, while the fourth varsity eight was third behind a pair of BU boats.
In the V8 race, BU took control early and never relinquished its lead as it held of the Lions and Orange for the win. The Terriers covered the 2,000-meter course in 6:03.4 with Columbia second in 6:05.1 and SU third in 6:14.2.
The Terriers retained the Conlan Cup, awarded annually to the winner of the race between SU and BU, as well as the Lusins Trophy, contested each year between BU and Columbia.
BU (6:03.1) proved strongest in the 2V8 race as well, winning by open water while the Orange (6:13.6) finished second, holding off all attempts by Columbia (6:16.2) to gain on the home crew in the final 500 meters.
The 3V8 race was won by BU (6:17.2) with SU placing second (6:22.9) and Columbia (6:40.9) well back in third. BU's 4V8 (6:22.3) completed the sweep by winning the day's final race over the Terriers' 5V8 (6:23.1) and SU's 4V8 (6:41.0).
The crews raced in a cross headwind on the Onondaga Lake Outlet. There was some chop in the first 800 meters on the open lake before flattening in the canal. Winds were variable at 8-12 mph.
Syracuse and Boston University have been racing for the Conlan Cup every year since 1987 when the trophy was created. The race is named after Joseph F. Conlan, Jr. who was the founder of the Boston University rowing program. The Orange has won the cup 15 times in 28 years.
The Orange returns to action in two Saturdays when it heads to Hanover, N.H. on May 10 to close out its cup season against Dartmouth for the Packard Cup.
