GREENSBORO, N.C. - Syracuse softball senior Jasmine Watson was honored as the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week on Monday, April 28 after leading the Orange to a series win against Virginia Tech while clinching a spot in the upcoming ACC Championship.
Watson powered Syracuse to a 4-2 record last week, including two critical wins against Virginia Tech, the number two team in the ACC at the time. For the six games, Watson led the Orange in batting (.467), hits (7), home runs (4), runs batted in (11), on-base percentage (.579) and slugging percentage (1.333).
In three non-conference games to begin the week, Watson hit a homer in each outing and was 4-for-7 with six RBIs. She began the series against the Hokies with a 2-for-3 performance that included driving in a run and scoring one in the Orange's first rally – a game Syracuse would win in extra's to earn a berth into the ACC tournament. In the rubber match, Watson's grand slam in the third inning broke a scoreless tie and ignited SU's offense for a 7-3 victory. The home run gave Watson 16 on the year, matching the single-season program record while the four RBIs pushed her season total to 44, good for second on the single-season list at SU.
Earlier this season, Watson set the program mark for career home runs and now has 46, besting the former record of 38. Her career RBIs currently ranks second in school history, as does her .553 slugging percentage.
This is the third time a SU player has been rewarded ACC Player of the Week this season, second only to Florida State's four. Freshman Sydney O'Hara twice was named the conference's Player of the Week, most recently on April 14.
