IRVING, Texas—Macky MacPherson and Charley Loeb are two of the newest inductees into the National Football Foundation's Hampshire Honor Society, the NFF announced on Tuesday morning. The Hampshire Honor Society recognizes scholar-athletes as an expansion of the NFF's National Scholar-Athlete program.
MacPherson and Loeb and the 17th and 18th Orange to earn the distinction, adding to a list that began in 2008, the society's second year. They are two of 838 players from 267 schools that qualified for membership, the most in the foundation's history. Entering its eighth year in 2014, the Hampshire Honor Society has honored 4,089 student-athletes since its inception.
"We continue to raise the bar each year for the number of student-athletes who qualify for membership in the Hampshire Honor Society," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "The Hampshire Honor Society plays an important role in highlighting that college football players clearly play a leadership role in the classroom as well as on the playing field. We congratulate each of these young men for their commitment to excellence."
MacPherson served as team captain during the 2013 season and was a leader on and off the field. He earned a spot on the All-ACC Second Team and was a 2013 Capital One Academic All-District Team selection after having earned BIG EAST All-Academic distinction in his previous two seasons. MacPherson has been on the Syracuse Athletic Directors Honor Roll in five of his semesters as an Orange and earned a degree in geography in December.
Loeb was named to the BIG EAST All-Academic team in each of the last three seasons and made the Syracuse Athletic Director's honor roll in every semester at SU. After completing his undergraduate degree in psychology, Loeb has been pursuing a master's degree in instructional design development and evaluation for the last year.
To earn a place in the honor society, the student-athlete must be in their last season of eligibility at an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III or an NAIA college or university and achieving a 3.2 cumulative grade point average throughout their entire course of undergraduate study.
