Junior now eligible for national Academic All-America honors
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Orange attackman Kevin Rice was named to the Capital One Academic All-District I Men's At-Large Team on Thursday, May 15. It's the second consecutive academic all-district nod for Rice and the fourth time in the last five seasons an SU men's lacrosse player has earned the honor.
 Â
By virtue of his placement on the all-district team, Rice's name will be forwarded to the national Academic All-America ballot to be voted upon by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Â
Rice started all 16 games for the Orange in 2014 and led the team in points (80) and assists (44). An All-ACC selection and Tewaaraton Award nominee, Rice tallied at least one point in every game and recorded six games of at least seven points. In the season opener against Siena, Rice passed out eight assists, one short of the Orange single-game record. He also set the ACC Championship tournament records for points (15) and assists (11) versus Duke and Notre Dame.
Â
Off the field, Rice is pursuing a degree in history. He's been named to the SU Athletic Director's Honor Roll (min. 3.0 GPA) every semester he's been on campus. In 2013, Rice won the NCAA's Elite 89 Award for maintaining the highest GPA of any student-athlete among the four national semifinalists (Syracuse, Cornell, Duke, Denver).
Â
The Capital One Academic All-America program is administered by CoSIDA. To be eligible student-athletes must be a starter or key reserve, achieve sophomore standing at their current school, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.3 and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Â
Participants in fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling are eligible for the men's at-large program.
