Orange to play 10 home games, face seven NCAA qualifiers this season
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Matches against seven teams that qualified for last year's NCAA Tournament highlight the Syracuse men's soccer team's 2014 schedule, released by Orange head coach Ian McIntyre on Tuesday, May 20. The Orange will play 18 regular-season games, including eight conference matches, in its second year in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Â
The schedule features 10 home dates and eight road matches. Included on the home docket are visits by reigning national champion Notre Dame as well as College Cup participant Virginia.
"Our fans will once again be treated to some very exciting games at the SU Soccer Stadium," McIntyre said. "In addition, tough games on the road will certainly test the strength, character and quality of our group."
Following exhibitions against Hartwick (Aug. 16) and Akron (Aug. 22), Syracuse begins the 2014 campaign with home matches against Niagara (Aug. 29) and St. Mary's of California (Aug. 31) on college soccer's opening weekend.
The Orange's first road contest is scheduled for Sept. 4 at Rutgers, followed by another away match at St. John's two days later. The road trip through old BIG EAST stomping grounds precedes SU's ACC opener versus Notre Dame (Sept. 13), which defeated Maryland to capture the 2013 NCAA title, and a mid-week home game against Central New York neighbor Cornell (Sept. 16).
After facing the Big Red, two more road games await the Orange. Syracuse makes its first-ever visit to Clemson on Sept. 20 and takes a short trip to Vestal, N.Y. on Sept. 23 to play Binghamton.
Upon its return from Vestal, Syracuse hosts four games over the next two weeks. The Orange welcomes Virginia to the SU Soccer Stadium for the second year in a row on Sept. 27. Syracuse also hosts Colgate (Sept. 20), Albany (Oct. 7) and Wake Forest (Oct. 10) during the fortnight. The stretch of home dates is broken up by a return trip to Blacksburg, Va. for an Oct. 4 match with Virginia Tech.
In mid-October, Syracuse will be tested by consecutive road matches against Connecticut (Oct. 14) and ACC newcomer Louisville (Oct. 17) before returning home to wrap up non-conference play versus Bucknell (Oct. 21).
Syracuse concludes the regular season with ACC games against NC State on Oct. 25 and Boston College on Oct 31.
The 2014 ACC Men's Soccer Championship gets underway on Nov. 5 with first-round games at campus sites. The quarterfinals are scheduled for Nov. 9, also at campus locations. The WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. hosts the conference semifinals (Nov. 14) and championship match (Nov. 16).
"Every year we look to play a demanding schedule that will prepare us for the challenges of a very competitive conference campaign," McIntyre said. "It should be a lot of fun and we are all looking forward to bringing our boys back to campus in August for pre-season camp."
