BALTIMORE – Former Syracuse lacrosse star Matt Abbott has named to the final United States roster for the upcoming 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship in Denver. Abbott was one of seven midfielders to make the active 23-man roster, which was released today by U.S. Lacrosse.

The final roster was picked from a pool of 31 players that took part in last week's training camp and competed in Thursday's Major League Lacrosse (MLL) All-Star Game at Harvard Stadium. In addition to Abbott, former Orange midfielder JoJo Marasco and goalie John Galloway were among the 31 training camp attendees. Galloway was one of two alternates selected Monday. He will travel with Team USA, but can only be added to the active roster in the event of an injury (per FIL policy no changes may be made to the active roster after July 9).
Abbott was a first-team All-American and finalist for the Tewaaraton Award in his senior season (2009) at Syracuse. One of the top defensive middies in MLL, Abbott led the Orange with 77 grounds balls as a senior and finished his career ninth in school history with 212 career grounders.
Team USA heads to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., for a final training camp July 6-9 before beginning its world title defense on July 10 versus Canada.
