GREENSBORO, N.C. – Syracuse will host Penn State in the 2014 ACC/Big Ten Women's Basketball Challenge, the Atlantic Coast Conference and Big Ten announced on Wednesday. The Orange and Nittany Lions will play at the Carrier Dome on Thursday, Dec. 4 in what is the eighth year the two conferences have held the event.
"I am very excited about the matchup with Penn State," head coach Quentin Hillsman said. "This is a game against an elite-level program that strengthens our non-conference schedule and brings another NCAA Tournament team to the Dome."
Syracuse is coming off its inaugural season in the ACC, a campaign in which the Orange went 23-10 overall including a fifth-place mark of 10-6 in conference play. Syracuse received a bid to the NCAA Tournament in consecutive seasons for the first time in program history and recorded the first tourney win in school history when the sixth-seeded Orange defeated Chattanooga in the opening round. The successful season also included SU's highest Associated Press ranking in program history when it was No. 20 on both Dec. 23 and Dec. 30.
Penn State is coming off a 24-8 season in 2013-14 in which it went 13-3 in conference play to win its third-straight Big Ten regular season title. After the No. 11 Lady Lions were upset by Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament, they won a pair of NCAA Tournament games over Wichita State and Florida to reach the Sweet Sixteen where the three-seed fell to second-seeded Stanford, 82-57.
Syracuse is 2-16 all-time against Penn State, but won the most recent meeting, 72-53, on Dec. 6, 2007 at the Carrier Dome. That victory reversed a 71-46 loss by the Orange in State College on Nov. 12 the previous year in Hillsman's first game as head coach.
The Orange lost in its first ACC/Big Ten Challenge game in a tight 97-91 shootout at No. 25 Iowa on Dec. 5 this past season.
