More than 1,500 boys and girls expected to compete in 7-on-7 tournament
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- One of the region's largest 7-on-7 youth soccer tournaments is coming to Syracuse University this weekend as the Orange men's soccer program hosts the ninth annual Northstars Cup on Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8 at the Hookway Fields Complex near South Campus.
More than 100 teams and upward of 1,500 boys and girls will be in attendance, competing for championships across several divisions.
"I am really looking forward to this weekend and what a wonderful way to kick off a World Cup summer," Orange head coach Ian McIntyre said.
On Saturday, the U-8, U-9, U-10, U-11 and U-12 tournament titles will be decided. Sunday's action includes the U-13, U-14, U-15, U-16 and HS varsity divisions.
Games are 25 minutes long and will be played on fields that are 70 yards long by 50 yards wide. A point system will determine the playoff seeding for each division.
"I love this format because smaller fields and reduced sizes of each team provides the players additional touches of the ball and creates lots of action, lots of goals and, ultimately, a tremendous amount of fun for the kids," McIntyre said.
Admission to watch the tournament is free. Spectators and participants are encouraged to park at Manley Field House and take the shuttle to Hookway Fields.
