Gary Gait, the most decorated player in lacrosse history, added another gold medal to his trophy collection when he helped Team Canada win the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship. Gait served as an assistant coach for the squad, which defeated the United States, 8-5, in the final.
It's Gait's second world championship. As a player, he led Canada to the gold medal at the 2006 World Championship. Gait scored four goals in the title game to lead Team Canada to a 15-10 upset of the U.S. squad.
As an assistant coach for this year's Canadian team, Gait warmed up the goalies prior to each game. Tournament MVP Dillon Ward, who made 10 saves in the championship game, credited Gait for his performance.
"To have Gary Gait warm me up every game is unbelievable. I am so thankful to him for getting me ready,'' Ward told Lacrosse Magazine.
Gait is no stranger to success. He won three national titles as a player at Syracuse and seven as an assistant coach for the Maryland women's lacrosse team. Gait played on three National League Lacrosse (NLL) and three Major League Lacrosse (MLL) championship squads. He also won NLL and MLL titles as a coach and guided Team Canada to the 2007 ILF World Indoor championship.
Gait took over the helm of the Syracuse women's lacrosse program in August 2007. In seven seasons, he has guided the Orange to a record of 115-34 (.772), six conference regular-season titles and two conference tournament championships. Under Gait's tutelage, Syracuse has made six NCAA Tournament appearances and advanced to the Final Four five times and the national title game twice.
