Alums Doug Marrone and Tom Coughlin lead their teams in NFL Opener
When the Giants and Bills take the field to kick off the 2014 NFL season on Sunday in the Hall of Fame Game, it'll be a pair of Syracuse alums leading the teams out of the tunnel.
Two-time Super Bowl champion Tom Coughlin will lead the Giants against second-year head coach Doug Marrone's Bills in the annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio.
Coughlin played running back for the Orange in a backfield that featured Floyd Little and Larry Csonka. As a three-year letterwinner at Syracuse, Coughlin set the program's single-season pass receiving record in 1967, making 26 catches for 257 yards.
At the conclusion of this playing career, Coughlin got his coaching start as a Graduate Assistant in 1969 at SU and also coached the quarterbacks from 1974-76, and then was the offensive coordinator from 1977-80.
Marrone earned three letters as a starter on the offensive line and earned Associated Press All-East First Team honors as a senior, second team as a junior and honorable mention as a sophomore.
He continued his career in the professional ranks after being selected in the 1986 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Raiders. He played for the Dolphins (1987) and Saints (1989) before concluding his playing career for the NFL Europe London Monarchs from (1991-1992).
Marrone patrolled the Syracuse sidelines from 2009-12 as the team's head coach. He led the Orange back to a bowl game after a five-year drought in 2010, where 'Cuse beat Kansas State in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. He'd later lead Syracuse past West Virginia in the 2012 Pinstripe Bowl after the Orange tied for the regular season Big East crown.
In addition to the signal callers, the game will have plenty of Orange flavor as five players (four Giants and one member of the Bills) played their collegiate football at Syracuse.
Defensive tackle Jay Bromley (2010-13), linebacker Jameel McClain (2004-07), quarterback Ryan Nassib (2008-12) and tackle Justin Pugh (2009-12) of the Giants will square off with the Bills' center Mackey MacPherson (2010-13).
The Hall of Fame Game will kickoff at 8 p.m. on Sunday and will be televised on NBC.
